The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz following Ghana’s difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The decision comes shortly after the Black Stars suffered a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 29, leaving Ghana without a point from its opening two Group C matches.
Ghana had taken a commanding 2-0 lead through Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan before The Gambia mounted a remarkable comeback. Mohammed Badamosi scored twice, while Ebrima Colley also found the net twice to complete the visitors’ 4-2 victory. The defeat followed Ghana’s 2-0 loss to Côte d’Ivoire in the opening Group C fixture, meaning the Black Stars began their qualifying campaign with consecutive defeats.
Queiroz’s brief second spell with Ghana Queiroz returned as Black Stars head coach in September 2026 after the GFA reached an agreement with him for a new coaching mandate following the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His latest spell ended after seven matches, with the team recording one win, two draws and four defeats.
During the recent AFCON qualifiers, Ghana struggled to produce results, losing to both Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia and leaving the team at the bottom of Group C after two matches. Following the defeat to The Gambia, Queiroz accepted responsibility for the result but said the decision on his future rested with the GFA board.
